RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)
“The people of God, represented by the local church, should always understand and show that the initiation of adults is its concern and the responsibility of all the baptized…the community must not only aid the candidate, it must also journey with them.”

What is RCIA?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process described in four stages. Through prayer and study an adult is led to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Catholic faith. It is directed toward the possible decision to become a full member of the Catholic Community.

Although “Catechumen” is a word unfamiliar to us, it was used by the early Church to describe those in the process of becoming a Christian. For the Sacraments of Initiation, those who are already baptized are called “Candidates.”

This journey of faith includes steps or rites for marking progress as one ascends to another stage along the way.

In this four-stage process, Catechumens and Candidates are joined by their sponsors and the parish community, who support them on this important journey through their presence and prayer.

Who is RCIA for?
  • Unbaptized adults or older children who wish to learn more about the Catholic faith with the possibility of becoming Catholic.
  • Baptized Christians from other denominations who would now like to learn more about and possibly join the Catholic Church.
  • Baptized Catholics who would like to prepare for Confirmation and Eucharist.

    What is the process for RCIA?
    We begin with an information meeting to explain the entire process and answer questions. Individuals then have time to decide if they wish to continue. Involvement can be discontinued at any time.

    What are the four stages of RCIA?
    PRE-CATECHUMENATE
    This time of inquiry or telling faith-stories is extended over a period of some weeks. It takes place with other people interested in the RCIA program and the RCIA team, who will guide the process.

    CATECHUMENATE
    Those who choose to become Catechumens are formally enrolled and begin a period of instruction on the Church, Christ, Scripture, Sacraments and daily living in the Catholic Community.

    ENLIGHTENMENT
    This stage is a time of spiritual preparation during Lent. It is a time to consider one’s readiness to receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Catechumens and Candidates who choose to receive the Sacraments of Initiation are received into the Church at the Easter Vigil service on Holy Saturday evening.

    MYSTAGOGY
    The Easter Season is a time for deepening the Christian experience, for spiritual growth, and for entering more fully into the life and unity of the community.
